10 Days Island Hopping from Martinique - Clipper Stad Amsterdam

http://www.stadamsterdam.com/content/schedule/reisinfo/2009/01.xml

Day 1:  ArrivalMartinique is a slice of France set down in the tropics. Islanders wear Parisian fashion and eat croissants. Bars and nightclubs will remind you, however, that Martinicans have a culture of their own, solidly based on West Indian Creole traditions. On board of the Clipper Stad Amsterdam you will be welcomed by the captain and his crew.Day 2:  SailingToday you will sail with the Clipper from Martinique to St. Vincent. St Vincent and the Grenadines form a multi-island nation; the 30 islands and cays that comprise the Grenadines are among the most popular cruising grounds in the Caribbean. They are surrounded by coral reefs and clear blue waters ideal for diving, snorkelling and boating. Fewer than a dozen are inhabited, and even these are lightly populated and barely developed. Day 3:  St. VincentThis day you can enjoy St. Vincent. After breakfast you can go ashore to visit the famous fish market, the rum shops and the stone-block colonial buildings. There are many good hikes on St Vincent, including the Vermont Nature Trails and the more challenging trek up the La Soufrière volcano, which passes through banana estates and rainforest. Weather permitting, a view of the crater awaits you at the summit.

The warm climate makes it a breath of fresh air for those who have grown weary of extreme cold as seen in some parts of the US and Canada or even Russia. Jylland in drydock on Island of Martinique

http://www.fortunecity.com/bally/galway/95/index2.html

id=fcnavbartablerow> web hosting short URLs photo sharing ng> TheJylland was being drydocked in the hope that her original lines could be reinstated after years of being too lightly laden amidships. She had essentially warped or bulged upwards amidships because of the relative heaviness of the engine in her stern section (the engine, although old, was not an original installation), her consistent lack of a heavy cargo amidships (albeit ballasted with concrete), and her relatively heavy anchors and chain forward. We replaced several hundred square feet of planking below the waterline, refastened her with trenails (in this case 3/4 hardwood dowels), recaulked her, reballasted with cast iron from an old sugar mill, and installed new water tanks and flooring.Furthermore, after the damaged sustained from Hurricane David, we had to strip the engine down to clean and lubricate it, install new radio equipment and a new generator, and repair and refinish all brightwork, rigging, blocks, etc.All of her beautifully finished interior cabins (installed when the Hambers refitJylland in England) had been removed prior to the drydocking so that we could access the bilge and the interior layer of her hull.We never refitted her with cabins prior to her final demise.Jylland in drydock. Jylland being prepared for Hurricane David Here, David Hamber is lowering the topmasts in preparation for the imminent arrival of Hurricane David. We only had short notice before the hurricane hit, but we were able to prepareJylland to some extent in our effort to mitigate damage. In this photo, theJylland is shown during the early hours of Hurricane David.Drydock management had made the decision to flood the dock so as to mitigate damage to the facility and to the other vessels also in the drydock at that time. Jylland , however, was unable to refloat since she still had several damaged below-the-waterline planks removed for later replacement with new stock.Follow this link to moreJylland . . .

A Special Advertising Section on Martinique

http://www.internationalspecialreports.com/archives/98/martinique/15.html

A Special Advertising Section on Martinique A Special Advertising Section on Martinique Homage to Aime Cesaire through the exhibition Facing the CenturyArtists use a variety of mediums to pay their own tribute to the Father of Negritude...Et il reste a l'homme a conquerer toute interdiction immobilise aux coins de sa ferveur et aucune race ne possede le monopole de la beaute, de l'intelligence, de la force...Aime Cesaire's choice of powerful words, which translate easily into English - conquer, immobilize, fervor, beauty, intelligence, force - have shaped the history of Martinique, the identity of its people and the fight for equality that continues today - equality for blacks and whites, Creole and French, poor and wealthy.Although his writings are in French, the significance of his words is often clear, even without a dictionary or translation. To the French, who have a long history of protecting their language, the emergence of Cesaire and his compatriots on the 1930's French literary scene was a shock.Cesaire an intellectual, poet, and later a politician, created a brand new word, negritude, which came from the French word negre, a derogatory reference to blacks. In his book, Cahier du Retour au Pays Natal (A Return to the Native Land), this negative term was used as a rallying point for freedom and liberation. The French were resentful that from the tiny island of Martinique, where most people worked in the banana and sugar plantations, arose a man who could use their own words against them.Although negritude began as a literary movement, in the 1960's it became incorporated into the anti-colonialist movement in Africa.Along with Leopold Sedar Senghor and Leon Damas, Cesaire's works were used as a cry for freedom. However, despite their friendship and mutual respect, Senghor and Cesaire differed in certain important areas.Cesaire felt that negritude was a temporary condition that held back the development of the black people.Senghor, however, believed that negritude was a biological condition and that blacks were blacks because of their essential biology.Cesaire also believed that any grouping could claim negritude and use it as a path to freedom. ...je serais un homme-juif, un homme-cadre, un homme-hindou-de-Calcutta, un homme-de-Harlem-qui-ne-vote-pas, l'homme-famine, l'homme-insulte, l'homme-tortue...While in America we now speak of African-Americans and other hyphenated Americans, it was Cesaire who used hyphenation as a description of origin and as a unifier with other cultures seeking acceptance and freedom, not separation. The above excerpt is expressing his belief that all people who have been ignored, disregarded, and enslaved are brothers in experiencing negritude. After Charles de Gaulle came to power, a new constitution was created and the French Fifth Republic was born.During this period, referendums were held in France's colonies. A vote of yes meant a colony would remain French, while a vote of no signified a colony would become its own free country.Senegal was one of the newborn countries and Senghor became its first President.Meanwhile in Martinique, many waited to see if Cesaire would lead them to independence. But with a long-term vision in mind, Cesaire did not rally the island around a no vote.Martinique remained French.Cesaire sees history with a big ‘H', explains Annick Thebia-Melsan, who conceived and worked with UNESCO to put together this international exhibition. He understood that Martinique was an island of 250,000 people and did not have the resources to become its own country. In the 1960's, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Che Guevara, Nelson Mandela and many others were using violent and non-violent means to liberate the blacks from the effects of slavery, colonialism and themselves.Cesaire, who had long since returned to Martinique, continued to use his words as weapons to wake the world to the possibilities and opportunities that lay ahead....Et voici de tous les points du peril l'histoire qui me fait le signe que j'attendais,Je vois pousser des nations. Vertes et rouges, je vous salue, bannieres, gorges du vent ancien, Mali, Guinee, Ghana...The exhibition Facing the Century, an homage to Aime Cesaire, has just completed its run in Fort-de-France's new Cultural Center.Spearheaded by Thebia-Melsan and supported by UNESCO, the Martinique exhibition began as an initiative by President of the General Council, Claude Lise.I discovered Cesaire's poetry when I was 14.I respect and love him like a father, Lise says. And, indeed Cesaire is the father and founder of Lise's Martinique Progressive Party. The exhibition first opened in Benin in 1995 and is now on its way to Brazil.Divided into eight modules, the exhibit is powerful not just for the images but for the words. This is an exhibit that should be walked through slowly, while speaking aloud the statements of some of the world's most influential peopl

A Special Advertising Section on Martinique

http://www.internationalspecialreports.com/archives/98/martinique/7.html

A Special Advertising Section on Martinique A Special Advertising Section on Martinique A new ministry is working to protect Martinique's diverse environmentThe Island needs to create an environmental plan for the futureMartinique has much to offer the world, including a rich diversity of flora and fauna, beautiful beaches and clean air.The alizes or breezes that come off the ocean have been cleansing the island for centuries. However, rapid population growth, a recent surge in car ownership and other man-made problems have threatened the island's environment.Five years ago, the Environmental Ministry, a state entity, was opened in Martinique. The Ministry works with agencies that already exist in Martinique to protect the environment and plan for the future. Our first step was to create an inventory of the flora and fauna on the island, explains Jean-Louis Millo, Director of the Ministry. We discovered many species endemic to Martinique. To protect certain plants and animals, the Ministry began to create reserves and parks. The most popular flora and fauna reserve is at Caravelle, at the tip of the peninsula leading off Trinite.Within this park is a marine reserve at Treasure Bay where bands of coral need protection.A bird reserve was started in Santa Anna.Next on the list is the forest near Mount Pele, a mangrove park in Fort-de-France, and the protection of a small island on which they discovered Martinique's last iguanas. Martinique is normally a green island because of the frequent rains. But lately, the rainy season has not been rainy enough.During this past hurricane season, while the rest of the Caribbean and parts of the United States got pummeled by high winds and rain, Martinique stayed, for the most part, dry. This has led to a shortage of water, especially after a long dry season.Water, that comes from the north and is distributed down through the south, has been in short supply. This drought has also affected banana plantations that require a lot of water necessary for the irrigation of their fields.Another environmental concern among Martinicians is the lack of a water purifying plant.Untreated water, sometimes laden with chemicals from agriculture and pollution from rum distillation, flows back into the ocean.Fort-de-France bay is especially contaminated, and the pollution is flowing into the rivers and heading south to the coral reefs. Our main job is to put in a water treatment facility and to clean urban pollution from the seas and rivers, says Millo. We are also working on a plan to save water.A surge in population has led to problems with family wastes, such as plastics and other trash.Culturally, the Martinicans are like the French. They drink a lot of water, bottled in plastic containers. The accumulated detritus of the past 30 years is piled onto 20 hectares of trash that is almost 70 feet high. The Ministry is working to have an incinerator in place by the year 2001 and a compost by the year 2004.On top of this kind of trash, Martinique faces another challenge: what to do with industrial wastes such as car carcasses, batteries, paint, solvents, hospital wastes and banana sacs.Old cars wind up in the ocean and stuck in the mangroves, Millo attests.Hospital wastes aren't treated and the liquids get sent straight into the oceans.Millo promises they are still working on solutions to these frightening solutions. One industry is cleaning itself up.We have been sensitive to the fact that our industry creates many nuisances to the environment, states Olivier de Pompignan, Director of Gipam, an association of banana producers and exporters.Banana producers plan to install bins with trash compactors to crush the bags into tiny pieces, which will then be transported and recycled.De Pompignon hopes that this system will be put into operation by 1999. The Ministry is also working on a plan to protect the sea and land by buying property to prevent its development, to clean it up and take care of it. The state will be an actor in providing the funding for this goal, as will the General and Regional Councils. Millo has other priorities.Air pollution is a concern, although until now the alizes have kept the air clean. However, a lack of collective transport coupled with an abundance of cars are problems. He also worries that Martinique is not doing enough to educate its children or its people on the absolute necessity of protecting this small island. It is not uncommon to see people throwing things on the streets or out of the windows of their cars. Many people don't seem to understand that plastics won't simply disappear, but will remain there making the beautiful island look unattractive and unclean. The irony of this unfortunate situation is that foreigners and those that have lived overseas are more caring about the local environment than the locals. People who have spent time in France or abroad come back home and

The approachat Orly's airport with the airport under the snow is great, and the domesticflights between the differents Caribbean's islands are excellent with beautifuls views.Julien Roquoplo ; Paris, FRANCE This DVD is my very first World Air Routes film in my collection. This was an excellent DVD. I enjoyed the walkaround checks of the Airbus A330-200 done by cpt. Lafourcade and the ERJ-145 by cpt. Plasir. The Airbus A330-200 cockpit was well presented by cpt. Lafourcade. I also enjoyed the beautiful carribean destinations. And last but not least I have flown on the Cessna 208 Caravan fleet on routes from St. Maarten to St. Barths and also to Marie Galante. If you are looking for some great carribean scenery then this DVD is the right one for you! Spencer Mitchell ; Detroit MI, USA This would have to be the best World Air Routes DVD in my collection. This DVD is my 13th one and definitely not my last. I really enjoyed the flights in and out of St Barth, Paris Orly and Flt833 which includes four sectors around the islands. A very Tropical experience!!! Great work World Air Routes, hope to see more great DVD's shortly.Matthew Albiston ; Sydney, AUSTRALIA Email your comments - - - - -Photos .
