27 Jul 2007 at 10:35am AJAX web applications are more complicate to test in an automated way than "classic old web apps": tests often have to perform additional actions to ensure a deterministic test execution. Marc Guillemot (lead developer of the Open source projects HtmlUnit and Canoo WebTest) presents in his blog a feature of the upcoming HtmlUnit release: the possibility to re-synchronize AJAX calls that should run asynchronously.
Not all physicists think time started with the Big Bang -- it could have just been a transition from a collapsing to an expanding universe. But now Martin Bojowald of Pennsylvania State University in the US has studied a model of "loop quantum gravity" to show that even if such a pre-Big Bang universe did exist, it would be impossible to grasp certain aspects of it (Nature Physics advance online publication).

LONDON (Reuters) - Forget about Britain's plan to reduce emissions 60 percent by 2050. According to a radical new strategy released on Monday, the country could be completely carbon-free within two decades.
The report said as many as 13 million deaths could be prevented yearly by reducing the environmental risks. All preventable. Tackling air pollution, contaminated drinking water and other environmental problems could save millions of lives annually around the world, the World Health Organization said in a report Wednesday.
clipped by: muckdogclipper's remarks: I don't think this one will make it by the Republicans. And with the demand for hybrid cars in the stratosphere, I can't imagine a low CAFE standard like this even making any difference whatsoever. But if we're growing tons of soybeans and corn, it's at the expense of other crops. And that has made an impact on cows that eat grains, Germans who drink beer (made from barley), and Mexicans who eat tortillas. Clip Source: www.time.comGreen Concerns Over the Energy Bill The overall legislation would expand energy efficiency and renewable fuel incentives, end many tax breaks for oil and gas companies, increase the mandate on biofuels (such as ethanol made from corn and soybeans) from 6 billion to 36 billion gallons, authorize a carbon sequestration pilot project (which would trap carbon emissions underground) and make price gauging on oil and gas a federal crime. Ironically, it was meant to be the easy one of the two planned global warming bills. The second, expected later this summer, would set a cap on and establish reduction timetables for carbon emissions. Tags: energy, environment, global warming
9 Jul 2007 at 3:48pm Columbia Journalism Review That's what James Ottaway tells Dean Starkman. "I am saying privately to many of the Bancrofts, and would say publicly: We should not sell Dow Jones and Ottaway Newspapers to Rupert Murdoch," says Ottaway, whose family holds 6.2% of Dow Jones. "If some of the family members want to sell their Dow Jones shares, let us find a way to buy them out that is not damaging to Dow Jones and its reputation for absolute integrity in reporting and analyzing global business news."
11 Jul 2007 at 1:52pm Sacramento Bee Tom Philp, who is leaving the Bee to work for the Southern California water district, says farewell to newspapering. "I will not miss the endorsement process and having to pick between two candidates who are wonderful or two who most definitely are not," writes the Pulitzer-winning editorial writer. "I will miss a newspaper that, for 15 years, has never changed a word of my copy with profit in mind."
19 Jul 2007 at 12:23pm American Journalism Review Rem Rieder will miss his managing editor, who has been named an assignment editor on USA Today's national desk. "Issue after issue, she aimed a bright spotlight on critical issues facing the field," writes AJR's editor.

18 Jun 2007 at 2:41pm "Reliable Sources" Dan Rather's recent controversial comments sounded familiar to former CBS (and PBS) newsman Terry Smith. "Six years ago, in an interview I did with him on 'The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer,' Rather used the exact same phrase about 'tarting up' and 'dumbing down,'" says Smith. "His reference then was to the pressure he was under at the time from CBS management to lighten up his broadcast and theoretically appeal to a younger audience. So not very original of Dan, but not sexist either."
A few weeks ago, Yahoo! launched a brand marketing campaign called, "Be a Better ________" which was designed to inspire people to become better at whatever interests them and, in turn, explore how Yahoo! services can get them there. We hope Yahoo! users are inspired to fulfill their passions. Here at Yahoo! we're taking our own advice and, as a result, have created the "Be a Better Planet" program to promote environmental dedication and to help affect climate change. The program invites everyone to participate in making a better planet, by doing one of three things: visiting Yahoo! Green and taking the "Green Pledge" to commit to lowering carbon emissions; contributing to the growing collection of knowledge and advice about environmental issues, by joining the conversations at Yahoo! Answers; or proactively looking for opportunities to live a greener life by performing "green" searches on Yahoo! OneSearch. Based on the total number of points earned for each green action, participants will receive a free energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulb and contribute to their hometown's overall ranking for a chance to win a fleet of hybrid taxis for their entire city. 13 Dec 2006 at 7:26am One of my favorite classes at University was a course on California History. (It's the class where I first met Jodi, some 14 years ago!) Also, it's the class where I really learned about the natural progression of development and change. I learned about the history of Mexican - US relations, the concepts including Manifest Destiny, how the Owens Valley changed the relationships between California north and south, even what Hollywood REALLY did to become a "place on the map."
27 Jun 2007 at 8:12am Boston Globe Steve Bailey says the Bancrofts "are fashioning a sorry fig leaf of alleged editorial protection for the newspaper they are abandoning for their horse farm, or whatever." These agreements don't work over time, he contends -- "you forfeit your right to a say the day you take the money." He adds: "This much we know: The Journal is a great newspaper. The chances of Murdoch improving it are much less than the chances of him compromising it. There were no finalists from the New York Post at the Loebs."> Bancrofts don't want to be briefed until all issues are resolved (NYT)
24 Dec 2006 at 3:52pm Have you seen "The Secret" yet? I'd experienced a surprise lesson almost a couple of years ago...someone teaching me what they thought the secret to achievement is. More recently, someone gifted me a copy of The Secret. One of the sections of the movie discusses "how to get what you want." There's a three step to go through:
"Transformers" conquers the weekend box office, earning $67.6 million from Friday through Sunday and a record-breaking $152.5 million in its first week. It's the largest seven-day opening for a non-sequel.
Live Earth will produce about 74,500 tons of the gas. "We would have to plant 100,000 trees to offset the effect of Live Earth," he said, speaking by telephone. But, he added, "if you can reach 2 billion people and raise awareness, that's pretty fantastic."

The NXTLOG Quadruped Building Challenge had over 50 4-legged entries and it was not easy to judge as you can see from the number of honerable mentions we just had to give! We encourage eveyone to view and comment on all the amazing entries by entering the tag "NXT200706" Here are the winners : CHAMPION'S AWARD We decided to carry over the Champion's Award from the last challenge. The Champion's Award goes to a robot submission that best meets the requirements of all the contest judging categories. This award goes to: LEGO Mammoth MkII Created by: bra888 bra888 wanted this robot be able to walk until it detects a certain colour. When that happens the robot will stop walking and start shooting a rubberband. If it runs out of ammo the robot reverses direction. bra888 is most proud of the design of the toes and heels. For an innovative design that perfoms well and a throughly documented NXTLOG, the LEGO Mammoth MKII is awarded the Champion's Award. Way to go bra888 you are a true NXT Champion! (bra888 has 8 projects on NXTLOG.) ROBOT DESIGN AWARD "Thing" Created by: GhostInside GhostInside asked, "What happens when you put all 4 feet on the same side of the critter?" and suddenly realized the quadruped could be something that looks a lot like a hand (or "Thing" from the Adam's Family). GhostInside's model took 3 tries to get right and it's a winner for Robot Design. Congratuations GhostInside! (GhostInside has 10 projects on NXTOG.) ROBOT PERFORMANCE AWARD Waiter-bot Created by: scottman162 scottman162 created Waiter-bot not only for the second NXTLOG Building Challenge but because, "the idea of a walking robot that will not run into any walls as been developing in my head for a while, I just saw this as a good oppurtunity to make such a robot." Waiter-bot's has a flat back capable of carrying a plate full of food and walks smoothly with a full of plate of food or a full cup of water. An Ultrasonic Sensor enables Waiter-bot from accidentally bumping into any walls or furniture, while a Compass Sensor allows it to find its way around the house. scottman162 is especially proud of Waiter-bot's walking mechanism and programming. We applaud scottman162's success in completing this challenge efficiently and present the Robot Performance Award! (scottman162 has 3 projects on NXTLOG.) CREATIVE USE OF NXTLOG AWARD Willy and Rufus: "The Big Race" Created by: Genoil Meet Willy and Rufus, friends for life, who boldly enter the The Big Race for the LEGO NXT Quadruped Challenge! Created by Genoil, Rufus is a single-engine, 18-gear asynchrous quadruped with rubber soles, but his joints are cranky and he's plain deaf (look at the missing sensor cable!). His rider is Willy, a little bot of the NXT race with eyes that peer in the distance. When there's a space ahead, he will charge Rufus to go ahead full speed and stop when they meet the finish wall. Well, that's basically all Willy can do. For these innovative robots and documentation we award Genoil the Creative Use of NXTLOG Award. Congratulations!
