Akhenaten had an extensive family, which was well represented in the art from his reign. His parents were Amenhotep III and Tiye. Akhenaten's name was originally Amenhotep IV, which he changed later. Akhenaten was married to Nefertiti, who is now famous because of the beautiful bust of her found at Amarna. Nefertiti's origins are uncertain. Some historians believe that she was a foreign princess, but there is some evidence to suggest that she was a relative of Akhenaten. Akhenaten and Nefertiti had six daughters, named Merytaten, Meketaten, Ankhesenpaaten, Neferneferuaten-tasharit, Neferneferure, and Sotepenre. Meketaten died when she was about eleven of unknown causes, and Neferneferuaten-tasharit, Neferneferure, and Sotepenre followed shortly afterwards. They were probably victims of a plague that was running rampant in Egypt at the time. There were two mystery figures in Akhenaten's family--Smenkhkare (Akhenaten's co-regent and successor), and Tutankhaten (later Tutankhamen). These two were almost certainly brothers--this was basically confirmed by the discovery of Smenkhkare's body in tomb 55--but their relation to Akhenaten is unknown. Maybe they were brothers of Akhenaten as well, or cousins.

This page is graphics intense, and may take a while to load. During Akhenaten's reign, Akhenaten led a remarkable artistic revolution to go along with his religious turnover. The style he used has been called both naturalistic and expressionistic, among other things, but how one classifies it really depends on what part of his reign you are looking at.

When Amenhotep IV changed his name to Akhenaten, his capital to Akhetaten, and the pantheon to the Aten, he uprooted not only the entire political and theological establishment, but also the outlook of a generation. There were nine "King's Daughters of His Flesh," six of whom were the issue of the King's Chief Wife, Nefernefruaten-Nefertiti. Two of the princesses would become queens in their own right, one wedding the boy who was to become Egypt's most famous pharaoh. Together, these children embodied the future of the Aten cult, the glorious XVIII Dynasty, and the future of Kemet, herself. Though the Sun Disc and its creator might wane in favour, shining always and forever would be the the Children of the Sun.

The Department of Egyptology and Ancient Western Asian Studies is a new department designed to explore what is sometimes called the birthplace of Western civilization. It builds on the strengths of Brown’s former Department of Egyptology, widening the intellectual focus from ancient Egypt to all of Ancient Western Asia, also known as the Ancient Near East, where and when societies first began exhibiting more complex forms of organization such as writing. As a field of higher learning, Egyptology and Ancient Western Asian Studies is represented at most of the world’s great universities. Its establishment at Brown, beginning the 2005-06 academic year, is a product of Brown’s Plan for Academic Enrichment, a commitment to higher learning in the humanities and the sciences.

Ancient Egyptians believed in properly equipping a body for the afterlife, and not just through mummification. A new study reveals that King Tutankhamun eased his arduous journey with a stash of red wine. Spanish scientists have developed the first technique that can determine the color of wine used in ancient jars. They analyzed residues from a jar found in the tomb of King Tut and found that it contained wine made with red grapes. This is the only extensive chemical analysis that has been done on a jar from King Tut's tomb, and it is the first time scientists have provided evidence of the color of wine in an archaeological sample. The report appears in the March 15 edition of Analytical Chemistry, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society.
