This is a listing of all known CDs comprised entirely of Malagasy music that have been released outside of Madagascar. When this CD-ography was first compiled at the beginning of the 1990s it had barely a couple of dozen entries. At that time there were no CDs being produced locally in Madagascar which had just a faltering cassette-only market. During the '90s we added the few local CD releases as they gradually appeared. However, by the end of 2002 the local CD market had exploded with numerous releases and it is impossible to obtain and keep up to date with full information on CDs coming out there. In addition, recent experience is that some local releases bought in major outlets in Antananarivo are in fact CD-Rs rather than properly pressed CDs. So from 2002 onwards we add only CDs released by labels outside Madagascar or available outside through normal distribution channels.

Help scientists learn more about fossas, Madagascar's strange, little-studied lemur-eating predators. Ankarafantsika and Kirindy Mitea National Parks, Madagascar — Although Madagascar's famous lemurs have been the subject of a great deal of scientific interest, researchers have spent little time studying the much rarer predators. Seven of the eight civet-like carnivores that stalk Madagascar's forests are found nowhere else in the world. The habits of many are virtually unknown, their population status a mystery. Dr. Luke Dollar and Leon Pierrot Rahajanirina, working with veterinarian Dr. Julie Pomerantz, are assessing and monitoring the size and density of carnivore populations in these remarkable forests. Their research comes in the nick of time, as deforestation and hunting for bush meat threatens many of these unique mammals and their habitats.

Beyond its role as elegant and expressive clothing, Madagascar's handwoven cloth, or lamba, serves as a ceremonial gift and a valued symbol of the island's cultural and artistic heritage. The Malagasy -- the peoples of Madagascar -- offer cloth to rulers, ancestors and spirits in return for blessings. In these instances, cloth becomes a material manifestation of hasina, a mystical, sacred force that strengthens human relationships.
